You Can't Master Internet Marketing Until You Learn To Communicate

By Dylan Robertson

When you are a novice to IM, the field can appear very intimidating, especially if you don't have any knowledge of the field. As you browse through information in articles and forums, you'll discover all kinds of lists featuring "how you too can be the next big thing!" Those lists likely all oppose one other.

One list will claim "patience" is the ingredient to succeeding in the IM field. Another will state that you have to be very smart about business if you want to be the next big thing. You'll also see several that will state that you must be really creative if you wish to succeed. And don't forget about all of the pages telling you that the software package offering there is what will help you become successful in IM.

The truth is that all of these things are important to your success (well, possibly not all of those software packages, but the other stuff). Business smarts, creativity and patience are all very important to your IM success. Nonetheless, none of those things count if you are unable to intelligibly communicate all of them to the people you want to do business with you.

There is more to effective communication than putting up an amazing sales page. You can hire a highly proficient copywriter to do that for you. Good communication is more than having a beautiful website with a really long FAQ section. An experienced web designer and writer can make those happen. If you wish to be a good communicator, you must develop interpersonal communication skills, not merely straightforward copywriting. So, what do you need to do that?

1. Respond to every single e-mail you get in one day. We aren't jesting with you. You don't need to write a novel in the body of every last email. All you have to do is pen a brief message that says something like "I received your e-mail and will be sending you a full response soon." When you do this, try to include a a snippet of the other person's e-mail. This indicates to the person that you really read every email and are not an autoresponder.

2. Don't let the phone keep ringing. Don't screen your calls. When your phone starts ringing, answer it by the third ring. Do this even if you earnestly don't want to talk to the person calling you. You'll be glad to know that there is an exemption to this certain rule. Don't worry about being close to your telephone aroudn the clock. Instead, simply specify definite "business" hours during which you plan on being available to talk on the phone. Put these hours up on your web site and state them in your voice mail message. And, of course, each individual who leaves a message deserves a return call.

3. Check with individuals to be certain that they have gotten your memos, emails, letters, etc. This shows them that you care about your correspondence with them. You'll endear yourself more with the people you work with and who purchase from you if you ask them if they have any questions and follow up to see to it that they understood the points you were trying to make.
