Job Seekers Turning To Tattoo Removal To Help Land Jobs

By Cornelius Nunev

Many people are out there looking for work but people who have tattoos have a harder time of it, as many companies sadly discriminate against it. Perhaps they shouldn't, but higher joblessness has led to a boom in tattoo removal.

Getting a job requiring tattoo removal

In an ideal world, image wouldn't matter to employers and peers as much as character and achievements. Unfortunately, that isn't really the way it works. Apart from discrimination on basis of age, gender, race, sexual orientation and so forth, another as-pect of a person's makeup that is matter to discrimination is whether or not they have a tattoo.

In many cultures past and present, tattoos were or are normal, part of a rite of passage or a core as-pect of a culture's identity. The word "picture" was coined by the ancient Romans, who encountered the Picts, a Celtic tribe known for extensive and incredibly vivid tattoos. However, not every-one is accepting of tattoos, including prospective employ-ers. As a result, according to the Daily Mail, tattoo removal businesses are booming.

The inked cannot sort mail

Bank of America and Allstate Insurance will both hire people with visible tattoos to work there, but there are a lot of compa-nies that will not. The sandwich chain Jimmy Johns will not hire those with tat-toos visible, according to the Omaha World-Herald. GEICO, Starwood Hotels, the U.S. USPS, and Denny's are all not willing to hire those with tattoos.

During the last year, there as a 32 percent increase in laser tattoo removals, according to skin car group publication Patient's guide. Visible tattoos are one of the top reasons that a hiring manager would say no to an applicant, on top of bad breath and piercings, as shown in a CareerBuild-er.com survey, according to Forbes. About 40 percent of people getting tattoos removed are doing so to try and get a job.

Paying for tattoo removal can cost enormous short term loans for some people since, depending on the size of the treatment, a person will need about 10 treatments costing around $200 each. And that is the cost for just one tattoo. The removal process needs a topical anesthetic because it is very painful. It breaks up the ink in the skin and puts it to the blood-stream to be filtered out.

Cause of tattoo restriction

Not every person is okay with seeing somebody help them who have a lot of tattoos on t heir body. About 90 percent of jobs in the country deal with services, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer, and businesses do not want to lose consumers depending on the appearance of their staff.

It is unknown what legal rights people really have for tattoo discrimination. People are always protected if the tattoos have religious value, such was the case when a male sued Red Robin for firing him over religious tattoos, according to the Equal Job Opportunity Commission. The suit was settled for $150,000 in 2005. A male in Pennsylvania sued the state for not hiring him in 2011 because of his tattoos. He was ap-plying to be a liquor enforcement agent at the time. That is one court case that had nothing to do with religion.
