You should get closer when you are going for a single tree. Go to the trunk and cover some texture in your photo range.

Keep some artificially made objects like statues, benches etc in your coverage. But considering the color is very important.

In a clear blue sky it is good to look for canopy and leaves of tree. You can go for fine points in veins as green contrast excellent versus blue. You should not take the photo of a bug chewed leaf.
